Friday's Letters

Dear Not So Ordinary Shop, I am beyond excited that you are finally open for business! Dear Friends, Look for a post and giveaway next week about the new shop. Dear Husband, Thanks for helping me so much with the shop, I promise to not tell your manly friends that you helped me sew some of the new camera straps... Wait "WHAT?" haha. Dear Family, You were amazing models this week, my camera straps never looked better ;) Dear Blogging Series, Your posts so far are amazing, and YES it's going so well that we are extending you to Wednesday! WOOP! Dear Kardashians, Even though I want so badly to not like you, I still end up watching you every week :( Dear Weekend, It looks like it's just me and you this time. The husband has to work Saturday AND Sunday (after church of course), at least I will get a lot of blogging done?

managing blog sponsorships button

Hi, I'm Andi and I blog at The Hollie Rogue. I have been blogging since February of 2011 and have learned so much about so many blog things along the way. I certainly don't have it all figured out and am constantly brainstorming ideas with my blogging friends.

That said, today, I'd like to share with you some of the things I've learned when it comes to managing sponsorships on my own blog. 1. Decide on the numbers and stick with them: Decide how many ad spots you want to have and how many of each size. I personally like it when a blog has fewer ad spots and the ones they have are larger in size. I don't want to be lost in a sea of small ads. Also, fewer ads on your own blog allows you to give personalized attention to each sponsor, interactions on social media, and keeps you a little more sane with sending out invoices and staying organized (see #3). 2. Decide on the packages and follow through with your promises: With each ad spot, clearly define what the sponsor spot includes. Will it just be a sidebar spot or does it also include a guest post, giveaway, social media shoutouts, etc? I find that including some, if not all of the additional options really optimizes the sponsor's exposure. 3. Stay organized: This is difficult but highly NECESSARY! I use a year planner that includes post ideas, blogging events, and yes, my sponsor spots. I also have an excel sheet where I record my sponsor's stats (followers, facebook likes, etc) at the beginning and end of the month. Create computer files for sponsor spotlights and giveaways so that you'll always know where all of those photos/posts are easily found. 4. Anything you can do in a minute or less, do RIGHT AWAY: This is a simple tip, but so helpful in keeping you from feeling totally overwhelmed with sponsor stuff. I have a rule that if I get an email and it is something I can do in a minute or less (ie: send out a tweet, or facebook status, email back a quick response, etc), I do it RIGHT THEN. It is checked off the mental list and I don't have to worry about remembering to come back and do it later. 5. Surprise them with your effort: The last tip that I have is to go above and beyond for your sponsors. If you are serious about having sponsors, then make sure you put in the effort to follow through with what you promise, spend a couple minutes a week to visit their sites/shops and leave a comment, pin a product, or just send a "how you doing" email. It really means a lot and for me, sponsorships are much more about the friendships developed than the money made. Your sponsors will be appreciative of your hard work and hopefully come back again!

The How-To's of Blogging Series Part 3

Today we continue with Part 3 of "The How-To's of Blogging Series". I am hosting this awesome series with Two Shades of Lovely so make sure and visit there blog as well. This entire week will be filled with posts on how to make you a "better" blogger, so make sure to come back because there will be a new topic everyday. You can find out who will be posting this week by clicking here

I blog at Mama Marchand's Nest and the Etsy shop Mama's Nest Designs. I am honored that Melissa asked me to be a part of this Blogging How To Series! Today, I'm talking about how to select who you sponsor. Keep in mind, I'm not an expert on this. In fact, I just started offering paid ads on my blog at the beginning of this year but since then, I've learned A LOT. I'd like to give you three tips on what I look for when I advertise on someone else's blog!

Check out their reader interaction.

Believe it or not, I don't look at price first. I do check out how many followers, subscribers, and page views they have but what I'm really looking for is how active their readership is. How many people comment on a regular, non-giveaway post? Does the blogger encourage interaction with her readers by asking questions in her posts? Is she actively engaging her readers with social media like twitter and Facebook? I like to sponsor bloggers who have a community on their blogs. It means they're more likely to click over to my blog and check me out!

Check out their ad packages.

Making sure their advertising page is clear about what's included is so important! Here's mine, if you want to check it out. Yes, price is important because we all have a specific ad budget in mind each month but more importantly, what do her ad packages include?

Will I simply get a spot in her sidebar? Usually, this doesn't create a good return on investment for me. I have the most success (meaning people click over to my blog) when I'm be featured in a post or a giveaway (even better!) and when they give me shout outs on twitter and Facebook.

When I first started paying for advertising, I thought the more blogs I advertised with, the better. Well, I've learned that it might not be necessarily true. There have been months where I've paid for just two more expensive ads on much bigger blogs and it has resulted in lots of new followers and page views. I tend to go with quality over quantity when it comes to choosing how many blogs to sponsor now!

Check out their other sponsors.

When I'm looking for new blogs to sponsor, I always click over to the blogs who are currently advertising with her. I want to see who I'll be joining in her sidebar! Are the other advertisers a diverse mix of bloggers? Do I know any of them? If I do, I'll sometimes ask how their advertising experience has been. Referrals rock!

If you have any questions for me about advertising, I'd love to help, if I can! Feel free to leave a comment on this post or email me!

The How-To's of Blogging Series- Part 2

Today we continue with Part 2 of "The How-To's of Blogging Series". I am hosting this awesome series with Two Shades of Lovely so make sure and visit there blog as well. This entire week will be filled with posts on how to make you a "better" blogger, so make sure to come back because there will be a new topic everyday. You can find out who will be posting this week by clicking here. If you missed Part 1, you can find it here.

Hello readers! I'm Kelly from Live Laugh Rowe

I'm tickled silly that Melissa asked me to be a part of her series. If you aren't familiar with me or my blog, I {love} spreading the 'how-to' bloggy {love}. I {love} encouraging bloggers to Dream Big! I'm a big dreamer. Why not? Right? Back in February, I spearheaded a Grow Your Blog Series and I continue to post other bloggy tips and tricks to help bloggers out -- especially the newbies. Trust me, I know how overwhelming it is in the beginning. For some, it's like learning a foreign language.

However, blogging is a world of fun with a fabulous growing community! It can, however, start to feel like a juggling act for a lot of us. We're busy... work, family, school activities, sports, church, and so forth. Soooo, it's important to know how to make the best use of your time, posts, opportunities, etc. I thought I'd share some tips I recently learned directly from Laurie, the Tip Junkie, at Bloggy Boot Camp (held here in St. Louis). Are you ready? Grab that pen and paper... let's go!

We've all heard of it and some of us have even done it . Sometimes it's successful and other times, it sucks {booooo!} What we don't think about is this -- who we're guest blogging for is giving us a piece of their virtual 'retail space' to use. WOW! They're giving us exposure to their readers, their SEO, their social media, their traffic, and so forth. That's a pretty BIG DEAL. Wouldn't you agree? Therefore, we want to make that guest post shine and 'work' for us in hopes of getting us a little more exposure. Here's how we want to do that:

{one} Clearly communicate and understand what the expectations are from the invitee. Do they want new material, or can it be older? If you're providing newer material -- when can you re-post it on your blog? Be courteous and respectful of what they expect and/or ask of you as the guest blogger. For myself, I like to ask that guest bloggers wait at least one week before publishing it on their blog (and that's if they choose to even to do so). {two} Pictures. Introduce yourself with a picture! Maybe its a candid, a family picture or your logo/avatar -- or both! Let the readers see how stinking cute you (or your blog) are so they can put a name with a face (and your blog). Also note that if your post is a tutorial and will include pictures, make sure they're good pictures. You don't want to ruin a perfectly good guest posting opportunity with sub-par pictures. {three} Link back to your blog at least four times. A lot of time we're guest posting in hopes of gaining readers, meaning we want them to visit our blog. A simple text post is NOT going to do that. So reference other items of interest or relevant posts from your blog that might interest those readers. {four} Plan ahead. Let's say you're guest posting on the painting technique you used to paint your study. Maybe the week or two before your guest post goes live, you can post about how you picked the color to paint your study. So, when you're guest posting on your painting technique, you can back-link to the post on how you picked your paint color. Does that make sense? {five} Teaser. At the end of the post, put one TEASER. Use a fabulous picture of one of your most popular projects/posts/ DIY/tutorials. Entice the reader. WOW them... make them want to click on over to your blog and see what you're all about and what you have to offer.

There we have it -- some Guest Posting tips that will help your blog get a little extra exposure and {love}.

With that being said, I hope you'll take some time to swing by my corner of bloggy land. Thursdays we par-tay at Live Laugh Linky -- and anything goes! Be sure to stop by and link up your crafty, inspirational, tips and tricks each week. You might enjoy some of my crafty tutorials as well. I am in love with all things vintage/vintagey, such as this:

Thanks again for having me sweet, Melissa! Hugs!

The How-To's of Blogging Series- Part 1

Today is the start of "The How-To's of Blogging Series". I am hosting this awesome series with Two Shades of Lovely so make sure and visit there blog as well. This entire week will be filled with posts on how to make you a "better" blogger, so make sure to come back because there will be a new topic everyday. You can find out who will be posting this week by clicking here

Blogging Lessons Learned During My Hiatus

Blogging can be overwhelming when you're first starting out. Platforms, hosting, widgets, html coding...it can all be very frustrating and mind-numbing. Not to mention networking, social media, commenting, and before you know it you are spending hours trying to get your baby blog off the ground. I spent almost 3 years building my previous blog and everything was flowing along nicely until life got in the way. I ended up taking a break from my blog that started out as a short term hiatus and turned into a year long sabbatical.

During my time away I had the chance to reflect on why I started blogging in the first place and what I wanted to do differently when I came back. Towards the end of my posting on my (now shut down) first blog I was burned out. I was no longer posting for myself, I was no longer happy in what should have been my space. During my year long sabbatical, I learned some lessons about blogging that I want to share.

1. Blogging is a community. This was a big lesson for me. I was very much an island during my first run at blogging. The nature of my blog, foster care and adoption, meant that I needed to maintain confidentiality. I was limited in what I could share, both words and pictures had to be censored. I didn't feel a real connection with my readership because I didn't feel like I could be myself. This time around I am social, I am real, and I am happier. I have made quite a lot of friends in blogland that I know I can count on to cheer me up on a bad day or laugh with me over some dumb random PR pitch that appeared in my inbox. I count some of these women among my best friends. You hear people say "find your tribe" a lot these days and I'm grateful to have found mine.

2. Sometimes it's okay to be niche-less. I am a niche-less blogger. I call myself a parenting & lifestyle blogger because people like blogs to fit into nice boxes but the truth is, I blog about a lot of different things. I wondered back in the beginning if I could be successful as a niche-less blogger and I wondered if being niche-less would make it harder for me to grow my blog. I have found that if I am passionate about every post then the emotion shines through no matter if it's a humor post or a post about my journey through postpartum depression.

3. Social Media is not evil. But there is definitely a right way and a wrong way to use it. I did not bother with Twitter or Facebook until I started up my current blog. I really didn't get the appeal of Twitter. I really dove in with both feet this time around. I learned how to use both Twitter and Facebook as effective tools to grow my blog. There is proper etiquette for Twitter that so many new bloggers haven't learned yet. As a general rule, people don't like to be spammed. I try to make sure that I'm balancing self promotion with the promotion of others. If I'm following someone who is only spamming me with 20 links a day to their own material and not trying to interact with anyone then I am going to unfollow them. Please don't be a spammer.

4. Make your blog appealing. I'm talking about more than just a good design and header, although both of those are important too. I'm referring to the little things that are sometimes overlooked. For instance, please turn off your auto-play music. I love music, I just don't want it blaring at me the minute I open up your page. Please turn off your word verification for commenting. I beg you, turn it off. In the 4 + combined years I have been blogging I have only had a handful of spam comments and they were easily removed. If you are really concerned, set the comment moderation so you can approve comments before they are published. Please have an About page and a Contact Me page. Every blog should have those. Please make it easy for someone to follow you. Don't hide your follow buttons at the bottom of your sidebar. Your social media and follow buttons should be one of the very first things that people see.

5. Don't get bogged down in the numbers. I know we all love followers, and comments, and pageviews. Those things are great and it's hard not to let your self worth and self esteem as a blogger hinge on those numbers. It's important not to lose sight of why you blog, once you do it's very easy for things to spin out of control. I rarely look at my stats anymore, not because I don't care about my pageviews but because I realize how much more there is to blogging than the numbers. The relationships and friendships that I've formed are more important. My integrity and staying true to myself is more important. I've turned down some very lucrative opportunities because they were not a good fit for me or my blog. Don't just jump at every chance that comes your way. I promise you, once your blog starts to grow you will receive plenty of offers and opportunities.

6. Remember the Internet is forever. Be careful what you post about other people. Always double check your facts, don't post gossip and rumors, don't steal other people's work, and don't say anything about someone that you wouldn't want them to read. You never know who is reading your blog as I learned the hard way in my first blog. I posted something that I really should not have posted and it came back to bite me on the bootie in a big way. I have set personal boundaries for what I share on my blog now. I'm careful not to tell stories that aren't mine to tell. I don't bash my husband, my in-laws, my family, or anyone else in our lives that might one day see my words. I never blog with an angry heart, it only leads to regrets later.

Those are just a few of the lessons that I learned during my year long sabbatical from blogging. I came back a much happier, much better blogger. I learned from the mistakes I made the first time and I'm enjoying my blog so much more this time around!

Guest Post: Mr. Shine's Food Blog

I am so excited to have Mike from Mr. Shine's Food Blog sharing a recipe with you today! This salsa looks amazing! Make sure to go stop by his blog and say hi!

I'm back!  I haven't posted any new recipes for a looooong time because I have been extremely busy.
(and we just got a new camera lens so I'm excited to see what you guys think of these pictures)
I've really missed cooking over the past few months and am going to attempt to do better...

Anyhow,
What you see above is a homemade salsa I created.
I'd never made my own salsa before this batch, but it turned out great!

It's fast, easy, and FRESH!

Here's a list of "los ingredientes"

1 mango
5 tomatoes
2 limes
1 lemon
2 cups cilantro
1/2 a cucumber
2 garlic cloves
4 tomatillos
a couple pinches of salt
2/3 of a red onion

Honestly, all you need to do is through everything in a blender and then puree it.

This salsa tastes zesty and fresh.  It will make you feel good and it is so good for you too.

If you want to add a kick to it, through some jalapeno juice or jalapenos into the mix.

Buen provecho!
